A project's fee is determined by the client's need, its scope, size, type, services required and the designer's involvement throughout the process. 

Projects of a greater magnitude such as a whole house renovation would be based on a set flat fee since the designer's role generally starts from the design development phase and into a project management phase and if necessary or requested by the client, construction administration.  This method also eliminates exorbitant hourly fees should any unforeseen matters arise during the project that may require an undetermined amount of time to resolve.

Projects on a smaller scale such as consultation, selection of finishes and materials, coordination with other trade professionals and/or city agencies for permits would be billed on an hourly basis.
